The Barney-purple bedroom
I was a newlywed, married about a year, in our first house, still paying off law-school loans. I wanted a purple bedroom.
I knew nothing about painting a room. I picked a purple that looked nice in the store. At home it was Barney. My husband came in, pleasant, and said, oh, so you painted it purple. He asked what I thought.
I do not lie to my husband. I burst into tears and told him it was the ugliest color I had ever seen.
He went back to the store with me. We picked a pretty light purple together. He did not paint it. I lived in that room until we moved, and I loved it.
Right after that, he sent me a story from his newsfeed. A man had been married twenty-five, maybe thirty years. His wife had always wanted a red bedroom. He said no. He did not even care that much. He was just being stubborn. Then she was diagnosed with cancer, and a few months later she was gone. He wrote that if he had painted the room red, she would have been happy every time she looked at it. He never got to.
My husband sent me that after I cried in a Barney-purple bedroom. I knew I had married a winner.
If you have a story that told you you married the right person, I would love to hear it.
