I despise wood panel anything, thus, I was confronted with a problem as soon as we moved into Maplewood. The basement level, informal living space, and my husbands office were all wood paneling. Originally, I really wanted the office space my husband has, but he protested when I told him I was going to paint the walls.
To be fair, the wood paneling in his office is actually pretty nice because it is real wood. Once my husbands office is prettified, I can take some pictures. Unfortunately, I have no idea when that will occur. He told me early on that his office was his own space and I should let him do with it as he wishes. I agreed.
Back to the wood paneling in the other rooms. The basement level was by far the worst. It was unpainted and I honestly hated going down there because it was so drab and dreary. We actually used that room to store some of our unpacked boxes, along with piles of clothing we planned to donate to Goodwill.
I am trying to hold true to my promise to my husband that I will quit spending money on the house for now. However, my parents generously sent me some cash for my birthday, so I used that money to buy paint for the space. I thought about the color choices long and hard. The room needed a really light color to brighten it up a little because there is only one window that brings in natural light into the space. I decided to use "Day Spa" by Behr.
Honestly, I knew I should have bought paint with primer, but I could not stand the thought of smelling those horrible fumes. Knowing what I know now, I would have bought the paint with primer and just worn a face mask to help with the fumes. Hindsight is 20/20. I used two gallons of paint, which is a lot for the size of the space. The room needed like 3 coats of the stuff.
I also replaced the switch plates in the room, which made it look less dated. Eventually I will get rid of the brown light switches when I call an electrician out, but this will have to do for now. I actually like going into this room now. My husband and I have been using it as a little game room, but we desperately need furniture for the space. I still need to finish the seats of those little chairs. Bonus: Found a place for the pink coffee table and my amazing barn (which my husband gave me for my birthday.)
